BREAKING NEWS: Prime Minister Hun Manet Clarifies Cambodia’s Position on Ceasefire Proposal Amid Border Tensions
Phnom Penh, July 25, 2025 — Prime Minister Hun Manet issued an official statement today to clarify Cambodia’s stance regarding the ceasefire proposal made by His Excellency Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia and ASEAN Chair, amid ongoing border conflicts with Thailand.
In a message shared on his social media, Prime Minister Hun Manet explained that on the evening of July 24, 2025, Anwar Ibrahim reached out by phone to discuss the escalating fighting along the Cambodia-Thailand border. The Malaysian Prime Minister expressed concern over the conflict and urged both sides to agree on an immediate ceasefire to pave the way for peaceful negotiations.
Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized that Cambodia supports the ceasefire, reaffirming that Cambodia was not the initiator of the current hostilities. He stated, “Cambodia agrees with the proposal because we did not start this conflict,” underscoring Cambodia’s commitment to peace.
He further detailed that Anwar Ibrahim, after consulting with Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, initially received Thailand’s agreement to a ceasefire, with both sides set to halt hostilities at 12:00 a.m. on July 24, 2025. However, shortly after that, Thailand reversed its position, stating it would not comply with the ceasefire at that time and would instead wait for a later date. Prime Minister Hun Manet noted that Anwar Ibrahim is fully aware of this development.
